Abstract

CLARENCE King born January 6,1842, at Newport, R. I. His ancestors on both sides mere New Englanders, of English blood, and among them not a few distinguished themselves in art, science, politics or commerce. His grandfather, Samuel Vernon King (partner in 1803 in the house of Talbot, O1yphant & King, later known as King $ Co.), was a pioneer in the China trade, and four of his sons succeeded him in the business.
