It is possible to hold a very optimistic view of the future of the U.S. coal industry, and there are those in the coal industry who generally choose to do so. For example, a major coal company stated recently in its annual report, "Coal's prospects appear brighter today than at any period in the past." In order to continue in this state of euphoria, it is only necessary to remind oneself of the following "facts":
