Abstract

"The current status and history of innovation in magnetic methods of material treatment are reviewed. The milestones and key drivers of innovation are identified, advantages of magnetic separation in comparison to other physical methods of material manipulation are discussed and reasons for failure to live up to its potential and expectations are identified. The future focus in such diverse areas as mineral processing, waste treatment, recycling and biosciences is discussed and the research and development needs are outlined. Our walk through the innovation landscape in magnetic separation illustrates the enormous effort that has been expended over the years to convert a wealth of novel idea into workable techniques. Remarkable progress has been achieved and numerous successful innovations have been introduced into material treatment operations. On the other hand these techniques have experienced their fair share of failures. The reasons for these cover a wide spectrum of risks that accompany any effort to implement new technology."
