Abstract
Except for optical purposes and a few other special uses quartz and quartzite are to a considerable degree interchangeable. This also may be said with respect to pulverized quartz and ground silica sand, which are discussed in a separate paper of this series.
All these materials, except perhaps quartz crystals of optical grade, are abundantly available in many parts of the United States. In the form of ordinary crushed stone much of it is sold at $1 a ton or less, and ordinarily
