Abstract

This report is the second of a series of papers on coal-mining methods and costs which are being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines for the purpose of placing before those interested in the industry a knowledge of the mining methods employed in this particular mine, and cost data on the several operations pertaining to removing the coal from the face into the railroad cars at the tipple with economy and safety. The methods employed are influenced by the natural local conditions, with respect to the thickness of overburden, frequency of local "wants," and the means employed for roof support, and its control
