This paper presents an analysis of a new tool for improved productivity in coal mining: the horizontal drilling system developed by Conoco/Consol. The analysis includes a brief description of the system; discussion of the three categories of advance exploration application of horizontal boreholes; and a survey of other special mining methods planned around long horizontal boreholes.
