Abstract

The mining and minerals industry has been, and continues to be, at the cutting edge of high technology. Iron and steel built the Industrial Revolution/copper electrified the world/coal tars and petroleum and gas feedstocks developed the organic chemical industry. Industrial minerals now carry forward this tradition. Two, of hundreds of examples of hi-tech industrial minerals are quartz crystal and rare earths. Both demonstrate the international market aspects of mining, processing and finished product trade.
