Abstract
In this paper an overview of the California Department of Transportation's (CALTRANS) bridge design criteria is presented. Special emphasis is focused upon seismic design and retrofit criteria. Topics include earthquake load definitions, foundation and structure type selection, structural earthquake analysis, and structure behavioral requirements.
