Abstract
This paper provides a determination of the equivalent level of protection of the international standards
relative to similar criteria used by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to approve
two-fault intrinsically safe (IS) stand-alone equipment. U.S. mining law requires such a determination
for MSHA to use alternatives to existing standards. The primary issue is to demonstrate that the international
standards for equipment evaluation will provide at least the same level of protection for miners
as the document currently used by MSHA.
