Aluminium, the third most abundant element in the earth's crust, has been regarded by some people as the metal of the 20th century. A metal symbolising another great leap forward in man's technological development. From the stone age man advanced to the bronze age, the iron age and now the age of aluminium. The 19th Century discovery of elec-tricity was quickly followed by the discovery of the Hall-Heroult process of smelting aluminium. It is this same basic process we use today.
