Abstract

ALBERT PORTEVIN, distinguished French physical metallurgist .and savant, has been added to the Institute's list of Honorary Members. Professor Portevin's work in collaboration .with A. M. Garvin represents one of the greatest steps ever made in understanding the heat-treatment of steel and the function of steel-alloying elements. In addition, he has published the results of important work, on the castability of ternary alloys, on the determination of oxygen and-oxides in steel, and on high-temperature oxidationn and scaling of steel. Notable also are his studies on methods of testing metals, on the constitu¬tion and structure of alloys, on founding and welding, and on alloys of aluminum, magnesium, and copper.
