Abstract

Cast in situ screw piling techniques (both displacement and non displacement) have seen considerable growth in recent years due to competitive production rates, low noise and vibration free installation. However the discussion on the mechanics of auger installation, which has implications on the installation effects and installation forces of screw piling augers, has been almost exclusively targeted towards non displacement techniques and in particular continuous flight augers (CFA). This paper discusses the historical development of the understanding of screw piling auger mechanics in sands and presents a new theoretical model to predict the soil transport and displacement characteristics of both displacement and non displacement augers with variable geometry.
