|The use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to solve informational needs in isolated and restricted underground mining environments are reviewed, and the specifications of some of the past and currently available systems are presented. The advantages and disadvantages of using various frequencies, system configurations and specific components, including their construction standards and capability, are also discussed. The remaining challenges to the more widespread use of RFID systems for personnel and vehicle tracking are identified, and recommendations concerning the operating environment capabilities are detailed.
