Hydrologic assessments of existing and proposed waste rock stockpiles are typically required for application of operating and closure permits at mine sites. A hydrologic assessment should include an evaluation of climatic data and prediction of the net infiltration rate through the waste rock stockpile surface. In addition, hydrologic factors such as the time required to deplete available moisture storage in the stockpiles and the time required for potential seepage to migrate to the underlying aquifer should also be predicted. |
