Dredging is a method commonly used to excavate subaqueous material. Dredging is usually associated with the maintenance of waterways and the creation of new ports facilities and channels; however it is also widely used in the mining and land reclamation industries. In addition, dredging has been used to remove contaminated sediments from waterways as a means of environmental remediation. In the past two decades, dredging activities have become highly regulated and publicly scrutinized. As such, new methods and technologies have evolved to transform what was a relatively ?sloppy? practice into an ?engineered? activity.
