|The use of Mobile Roof Supports (MRS) in pillar retreat mining has been a fairly recent occurrence in coal mining operations in the United States (1988). Determining the pillar block configuration, the crosscut and entry centers, the number of entries developed, the method of ventilation, and the type and mixture of equipment used arc all factors in establishing a successful pillar retreat operation. This paper will evaluate and report on the history of one coal company's relationship with MRS usage for pillar retreat mining and focus on the company's use of horizontal pillars (inverted-blocks) for the panel configuration.|
