A finite element modelling approach is developed for the evaluation of the mechanical performance of cable bolts supports in underground mine structures. The modelling approach permits the simulation of any arbitrary number or pattern of cable bolts, that can be either partially or fully grouted, with or without end plates. The modelling technique used treats each cable bolt as a set of bar elements representing the steel cable. The bond stiffness characteristics of the grout bolt interface are represented by shear springs uniformly distributed along the cable length. Coupled with a simple linear elastic analysis, this technique can serve as a dedicated numerical model for cable bolted excavations. The application of the model is illustrated with two case studies: one for a hard rock mine and another for a coal mine.
