A floor-bearing capacity test apparatus was designed and constructed to determine the true bearing capacity of soft floor materials beneath coal pillars or longwall face supports. The apparatus has been employed in entries up to eleven feet in height. Results of in-mine floor-bearing capacity tests suggested that the ratio of the soft fireclay thickness to the bearing plate width and the moisture content in the fireclay were the most critical parameters affecting the ultimate bearing capacity. Foundation engineering principles were applied to interpret the field test results to estimate the floor-bearing capacity beneath longwall face supports. |
