The Roof Control Division of MSHA's Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center has been conducting a program to evaluate methods employed by the U.S. coal mining industry during recovery of longwall faces. The objective of this effort is to provide information on safe and efficient roof control methods currently being used to recover longwall faces. In addition to a literature review and extensive contacts with MSHA and industry personnel, 14 mines were visited to observe firsthand various aspects of longwall recovery. It is hoped that the dissemination of this information will aid in the prevention of accidents and a reduction in costly downtime during recovery. |
