|Over the past several years, two types of roof control problems have been en- countered at Beth Energy's Eighty Four Complex mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania. These problems have been (1) poor roof conditions encountered while advancing submain entries and longwall panel entries and (2) deterioration and failure of long- wall gateroads, principally the tailgate entry. This paper discusses the efforts by mine personnel to analyze the origins of the various attempts to-deal with the problems, and the success (or failure) of these efforts. Highlighted are the use of various common roof Control materials, variations in mining techniques, cementatious pillars, and changes in pillar design using yield and abutment pillars to address these problems.|
